Should You Rent or Own Your Lead Retrieval?

Buy Lead Retrieval App to Use at All ShowsIn a recent editorial page article in re:ID magazine, Zack Martin, the editor, looked at the pros and cons of Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD). The questions surrounding BYOD have particular relevance to trade show lead retrieval. Mr. Martin articulates the main pros and cons of BYOD:

  • Employees are more likely to use smartphones and tablets  of their own choosing and be more productive than when using company provided devices.
  • Companies don’t have to invest in equipment.

On the other side of the ledger:

  • This puts a burden on IT departments, as they have to cope with a plethora of devices.
  • Companies open themselves up to greater security risks and virus attacks.

As Martin points out, people rarely forget their phones. A person’s phone is seldom more than an arm’s length away. That is unlikely to be the case with a company-issued device.

Martin’s conclusion is that in the end, BYOD will prevail. Companies should embrace it, not fight it.

As I wrote this, my daughter Orly called to say that she found the iPhone that she thought she had left in a taxi. This finally convinced her to install the Find iPhone app. This app and similar apps not only enable someone to locate a phone, but if necessary to disable it or even wipe all data from the phone. There are defenses that make BYOD more secure.

When it comes to trade show lead retrieval, BYOD makes a lot of sense. Licensing a lead retrieval app is more economical than renting a terminal. Most terminals, even the portable type, do not lend themselves readily to use off the show floor. A smartphone can be used to collect leads anywhere – at a coffee break, a reception, a seminar, anywhere. A smartphone or tablet lead retrieval app eliminates the need to stand in line to collect and be trained on the use of an unfamiliar device.
