One of the Worst Tradeshow Tactics to Avoid

It pains me when exhibitors want a printer to accompany their electronic leadBartizan Lead retrieval equipment retrieval terminal. Who are these people and why do they do it?

I suspect that most are AARP members. They probably yearn for the return of rotary dial phones. Yes, they are codgers like me. Given their druthers, they’d gladly go back to using mimeograph machines to make copies and  Telex machines for sending information electronically.

I’d bet that they would love it if cars once again had running boards.

When questioned, they’ll tell you that a printout assures that information will never be lost. People lose printed documents all the time, especially we “seniors”.  And, oh yes, you can jot down notes on your lead printout. If you are fortunate enough not to lose the printout, can you read your own handwriting?

Seriously though, why have a printout when you have a secure digital copy that is backed up in the cloud and available to to sales team immediately?

  • Lew,
As you read this, please keep in mind that although I am an old dog, I have worked with cloud technology for events and show organizers for over a dozen years, and I know how well it works, and how dependable it is.

In the early days of event technologies (1995-2005), you could not depend on anything on the show floor. And god forbid you exhibited at a show and the lead retrieval system failed in any way, shape or form. Indeed, almost all exhibitors have experienced a failure or issue at some show in the past.

Although, modern lead capture solutions are significantly better and more efficient than the old; the printouts with handwritten notes were, and often still are looked upon as back-up insurance – or at least they seem to be.

However, in this day and age of cloud technology and dependable internet connectivity, it is very easy to demonstrate the real-time, fail-safe dependability of modern lead capture solutions.

Indeed, they are even more dependable than anything paper dependent, or human dependent for that matter (who among us has not lost or misplaced a lead slip or business card?).

An electronic lead retrieval terminal coupled with cloud technology and its 24/7 access-anywhere features is definitely a better, more dependable, shareable, trackable, reportable, CRM and AMS friendly solution today…old dogs can learn new tricks, and then some!

  • Mike, I see your point about the possibility of your system failing. In this case a paper printout does make sense 🙂

  • Anders says:

Let me start off by saying I don’t consider myself a codger. I too can understand why some people like to print out their leads. Some lead machines allow for qualifying and notes but its not the easiest thing to do. Being able to have the freedom to write what you want is often faster and more than the point than trying to type on the lead scanner. When you are engaged with a prospect at the booth it’s easy to get both frustrated and flustered trying to use the scanning technology. Sometimes low-tech or no-tech is best.

  • Totally agree, the qualifiers on some systems are hard to use! Good point, thanks for your comments.
